John Anderson set a Bucknell basketball scoring record that may never be broken. On January 16, 1903, playing against Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in Tustin Gym, Anderson scored 80 points. The captain of the team that finished 10-0 that winter, Anderson connected on 30 field goals in the first half and 10 more in the second before retiring to the bench for the remainder of Bucknell's 159-5 victory. Also a football player, Anderson scored a touchdown on a long run against Carlisle in 1902. He left Bucknell after his sophomore year, graduated from Yale and the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, and was a practicing physician in Pittsburgh for many years. In his early days in Pittsburgh, he also played semi-professional basketball for the South Side Club and east Liverpool teams. Anderson's 80-point game stood as a collegiate scoring record for many years.Â
