Jay Gross was one of the top men's swimming sprinters in program history, and he won eight individual Patriot League titles during an outstanding four-year career. He won three PL gold medals in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly, and he captured two titles in the 100 free. In addition, he was a member of six Patriot League champion relay teams as well as one East Coast Conference championship relay unit as a freshman. Gross was honored as the Patriot League Co-Swimmer of the Meet in both 1992 and 1993, and he went on to win ECAC championships in the 100 fly and 100 free in 1992, and in the 50 and 100 free in 1993. He set meet records in both events as a senior. At graduation, Gross ranked second only to All-American and fellow Hall of Famer Jim Harvey on Bucknell's all-time list in the 50 free (20.36), 100 free (44.67) and 100 fly (49.69). He was also part of four school-record relays. Gross was a Christy Mathewson Award winner as Bucknell's top senior athlete, and in 2015 he was named to the Patriot League 25th Anniversary Team.
