Jay P. Mathias was not a varsity athlete at Bucknell but became one of Bucknell's most ardent alumni supporters of athletics. President of the Bison Club from 1953-1980 and a trustee of the University from 1968-73, Mathias was largely responsible for the growth of the organization that now supports all Bison athletic programs. He was a friend to numerous Bucknell athletes and did more than anyone to popularize the fight song "'ray Bucknell." Mathias was honored by the Bison Club in 1975, and that organization created a scholarship fund in his memory. He was also recipient in 1967 of the Bucknell Chair for "loyalty to the University." Prior to his death in 1981, Mathias was president of JPM Company, Inc., in Lewisburg, which he helped found in 1949, and he was president emeritus of the Bison Club.
