J. Douglas Nauman '73 achieved distinction in both football and track and field at Bucknell, earning regional and national honors in the former sport and setting a school javelin record in the latter. Nauman, who won three letters in football as a defensive tackle, was named to the All-Pennsylvania, All-East and Academic All-America teams in his senior year as the Bison finished 6-3, and was also recipient of the George Rieu Memorial Award as the Outstanding Lineman in 1971 and 1972. A four-year letterman in track and field, Nauman scored in the javelin at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships for three straight years before winning the event in 1973. His best throw of 231 feet, 7 inches broke the school record by more than 25 feet, and that mark remained the Bucknell standard when the IAAF changed the rules for javelin design in 1986. Nauman, who was the recipient of the Christy Mathewson Award as the Outstanding Senior Athlete, came to Bucknell from Hempfield High School in East Petersburg, Pa. He also earned civil engineering degree from Johns Hopkins University.
