Hugh Donovan captained the most successful men's lacrosse team in program history, the 1996 squad that finished a perfect 12-0, allowed the fewest goals per game in the nation (6.2), captured the Patriot League title and earned a No. 9 national ranking. Donovan was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year that season, and he is considered to be one of the top defensemen ever to wear the Orange & Blue.
Donovan earned Honorable Mention All-America honors in 1996 after helping the Bison rank No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense, allowing only 6.25 goals per game. He was a two-year captain and three-time all-conference pick, and he was later named to the Patriot League All-Decade Team. Donovan earned the Christy Mathewson Award as the top athlete in his class, and after graduation he played professionally both indoors and outdoors for eight years. He was part of a Major League Lacrosse championship team with the Baltimore Bayhawks in 2002. He later began coaching at the collegiate level, including stints as head coach at Harford Community College and Immaculata College.Â
