Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame

Herbert E. Stiefel
- Induction:
- 1998
- Class:
- 1952
Sport: Football
A standout offensive lineman on the undefeated 1951 Bucknell football team, Herb Stiefel was the ninth player from that team to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame. An outstanding blocker who almost never missed a minute of play on offense, Stiefel first gained attention when his teammates voted him Most Valuable Player on the 1948 freshman team that was coached by Hall-of-Famer Bill Lane and was the first to go unbeaten at Bucknell since the early 1930s. After missing most of his sophomore season with an injury, he came back to start at guard in 1950 and at tackle in 1951. While winning his second of two varsity letters in 1951, Stiefel blocked for a backfield that has gone into the Hall of Fame in its entirety and helped to open up holes for two backs who each gained 1,000 yards in the nine-game season. A native of East Orange, N.J., he was highly instrumental in Bucknell setting an Eastern total offense record of 463.3 yards per game.Â
