Glenn W. (Wally) Diehl
- Induction:
- 1980
- Class:
- 1928
Wally Diehl, captain of the 1927 Bucknell football team that went 6-3-1 and was the first coached by Carl Snavely, was noted in his playing days as a "bull-like ball carrier." He received All-America honorable mention honors that year, was chosen to play fullback in the East-West Game in San Francisco, and was a standout in Bucknell's 13-7 victory over Penn State, the first win over the neighboring school since 1900. A four-year football letterman, Diehl played professionally from 1928-30 for the Frankford Yellowjackets of the NFL. In his rookie season he was chosen for the all-pro team and was acclaimed the outstanding back of the year in the league. In a preseason article, a Philadelphia newspaper writer had said, "Diehl unquestionably was one of the best of the college crop last year. Physically, he has everything a football player requires in addition to an abundant supply of courage." Diehl later served as an assistant coach with the Frankford team and as backfield coach at the University of Delaware.Â
