George Cockill captained the football, basketball and baseball teams at Bucknell and later coached all three sports at the University. Winner of four football letters, Cockill captained the team in his junior year. In baseball, he was one of Bucknell's finest first basemen ever, was later an infielder with the Detroit Tigers, and once held the International League record for assists by a first baseman. A manager of pennant-winning Reading and Harrisburg teams in the Tri-State League and for one season an umpire in the National League, Cockill served as head football coach at Bucknell in 1914, basketball coach from 1914-17 and baseball coach from 1915-18 and 1921-22. He played minor league baseball in Reading, Williamsport, Albany (N.Y.) and Montreal and later coached at Steelton (Pa.) High School. A native of Pottsville, Pa., Cockill was a resident of Steelton until his death in 1937.
