The starting center on the 1935 Orange Bowl football team, George McGaughey received All-America honorable mention in 1934 and later coached for many years at Lafayette College, where he is also a member of the Hall of Fame. A two-year letterman who came to Bucknell from Vandergrift, Pa., and Keystone Academy, McGaughey is regarded by some as the finest center in Bucknell football history. When his Bucknell coach, Edward "Hook" Mylin, moved to Lafayette in 1937, McGaughey was hired as an assistant coach. He left Lafayette in 1942 to begin four years of service in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was an assistant coach at Wabash College and New York University for four years before returning to Lafayette in 1950, where he served 14 years as freshman football coach and 27 years as director of intramurals before retiring in 1977. Today the Bucknell football team presents an award in his honor to the most outstanding player in the Lafayette game.Â
