George K. "Lefty" James '30 was a three-year varsity end on the football team, and was also a baseball star, captaining the team in his senior year. His coach at Bucknell, Carl Snavely, later became his employer. After graduating from Bucknell, he spent several years as a high school coach in Central Pennsylvania, then joined Snavely, who became head football coach at North Carolina. James came with Snavely to Cornell in 1936, to serve there as Snavely's chief scout and backfield coach. He also assisted in basketball, served as head baseball coach, and directed the school's physical education program. He became the Big Red's head football coach in 1947 and held that post until 1960, winning Ivy League titles in 1948, 1949 and 1953, and tying with Yale for the league crown in 1954. His final record at Cornell was 66-58-2. After he left Ithaca, the very popular James served several turns as head coach for Pennsylvania's high school all-star "Big 33" team.Â
