The East Coast Conference cross country champion in 1977 and 1978 and winner of eight ECC indoor and outdoor track titles, George Buckheit was All-East three straight years and an All-American in indoor and outdoor track as a senior. In 1979 he placed sixth in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and third in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Buckheit captained both sports and was on seven ECC team champions. He graduated with school records in the indoor mile, 3000 and 5000, and the outdoor 1500, 5000 and 10,000. In 1979 he helped set the Bucknell indoor record in the distance medley relay, a mark that stood for 36 years. A native of New City, N.Y., he received the Christy Mathewson Award as the top athlete in his class, and he continued to compete in top competitions after graduation.Â
