A three-year football standout and Eastern Intercollegiate Boxing Conference champion in 1939 and 1940, "King" Funair was the leading rusher and scorer on the 1939 grid team and set the Beaver Stadium (Penn State) record for run from scrimmage (94). That run remains the longest in Bucknell history. Funair played on Bucknell football teams that lost only once at home in three years. In boxing, he had a career 13-3-1 record and won Eastern titles in the unlimited weight class in 1939 and at 175 pounds in 1940. A native of Punxsutawney, Pa., Funair was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers football team and then taught and coached in Johnsonburg, Pa., for 35 years. A member of the Keystone-West Sportswriters Hall of Fame, he was also mayor of Johnsonburg and a commissioner of Elk County.Â
