A three-year football starter and co-captain of the 1944 team, Hubka was an outstanding quarterback, halfback, safety and punter. A veteran of service in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II, Hubka began his career at Temple, and as a freshman quarterback for the Owls in 1942 received All-America honorable mention by both wire services. Hubka was sent to Bucknell for the V-12 officer program after enlisting in the Marines, and he went on to start in both football and baseball for the Bison. Hubka was a three-year starter at catcher in baseball and twice was the team's leading hitter. On the gridiron Hubka once had a 91-yard punt return for a touchdown against F&M in 1943, and he set the Bucknell record for punt return yards in a game (140 vs. Muhlenberg in 1944). Hubka played for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1946-47 and later coached at Camden and Plainfield High Schools in New Jersey, where he was also a three-sport official. A local resident, Hubka remained a loyal Bison fan well into his retirement years until his passing 2017 at the age of 93.Â
