Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame

Edwin S. Stebbins
- Induction:
- 1997
- Class:
- 1937
Sports: Track and Field
Considered one of the finest sprinters in Bucknell history, Ed Stebbins captained the 1937 Bison track and field team. In a dual meet against Juniata in 1936, Stebbins set a Bucknell record in the 100-yard dash with a time of 9.7 seconds. Over the next 40 years that record was equaled twice, but never broken. Stebbins also ran on Middle Atlantic Conference and Penn Relays championship teams in 1936. When track and field races switched to metric distances in the 1980s, the records for races measured in imperial distances were formally retired, so the record Stebbins set remains on the books. In fact, that was the only retired record set before 1971. Though details of many of his meets are incomplete, he is rightfully regarded as one of the premier track and field athletes in Bucknell history. A native of Wellsboro, Pa., Stebbins lived in Corning, N.Y., for 54 years prior to his death in 1994.Â
