A four-year football letterman as a wide receiver and kick returner, David Kucera set school season records of 73 receptions for 1,029 yards while earning Associated Press All-America Second Team honors In 1984. He graduated No. 2 behind Hall-of-Famer Tom Mitchell with 144 catches for 1,980 yards, Kucera had 15 career TD receptions, set a then-school record with seven TD catches in 1983, and scored 94 points in his career despite missing the equivalent of nearly a full season because of injuries. The recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, he led all Division I-AA players in the East and was fourth in the nation in 1984 with 7.3 catches per game, and he had a career average of 11.3 yards per punt return while setting a school record with 465 return yards. A graduate of Downingtown (Pa.) High School, Kucera was an honorable mention All-America selection in 1983, was co-MVP of the 1984 team, and received the Christy Mathewson Award, given to the outstanding senior athlete.Â
