Charles W. Allen
- Induction:
- 1983
- Class:
- 1892
Charles "Warhorse" Allen was elected captain of the Bucknell footbll team in his freshman year of 1888 and, according to classmate and fellow Hall-of-Famer Andrew Wyant, "was so assiduous and efficient as a leader that we re-elected him for each of the three following seasons." Allen, who teamed with Wyant to win the College doubles championship in tennis for four straight years and the Central Pennsylvania collegiate championship for two years, helped to coach the 1892 Bucknell football team and then followed Wyant to the University of Chicago. At Chicago, Allen captained the 1894 and 1895 teams coached by Amos Alonzo Stagg. While playing for Chicago, he was described by one of the writers of the day as "one of the most determined players imaginable. He has a splendid physique and indomitable courage, and is, moreover, particularly well acquainted with every detail of the game. He is gritty, tricky, and above all, never surrenders, no matter how unpromising the prospect. He seems to have a natural propensity for the game. When the fight is fiercest, Allen's genial mood reaches the climax." Allen, who prepared for Bucknell at Keystone Academy, later taught English and coached at Alma College in Michigan and at Whitman College in Washington.Â
