Brian Harshman won six East Coast Conference individual titles, including the indoor mile and 1,000 meters in 1984 and 1985, the indoor 2-mile run in 1983 and the outdoor 1,500 meters in 1985. Another in a long line of standout distance runners under Hall-of-Fame coach Art Gulden, Harshman set the Bucknell indoor record in the 3,000 meters (8:04.04) and the outdoor mark in the 5,000 (13:57.04). He became only the second man in Bucknell history to run the 5,000 meters in under 14 minutes. The Skillman, N.J., native was an NCAA qualifier in the 5,000 and was the Most Outstanding Performer at the 1985 ECC Indoor Championships after winning both the 1,000 and the mile. He also won the 5K at the Colonial Relays in 1983 and came back to finish third a year later. In the fall, He posted two top-25 finishes at the IC4A Cross Country Championship, finishing as high as 17th during his junior year. Harshman competed on Bison cross country teams that went 39-0 in duals, won for ECC crowns, and finished 12th at the 1982 NCAA Championship, the highest finish in school history. Regarded as an outstanding team captain, Harshman was Bucknell's top finisher in every cross country race as a senior, and he was part of teams that won 11 of a possible 12 conference titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field.Â
