Alvin F. "Doggie" Julian was one of Bucknell's finest football players ever, he starred in basketball and baseball, and went on to a brilliant career as a college basketball and football coach. Julian, who played at 162 pounds, was chosen on Pop Warner's All-America squad in 1921 and received the most votes at defensive end on an all-time Bucknell team selected in 1970. He also received honorable mention on the Walter Camp All-America Teams in 1920 and 1921, and he was named to the All-Pennsylvania and All-East teams in his senior year. A graduate of Reading (Pa.) Boys High School, Julian played professionally with the Pottsville Maroons of the National Football League and was a minor lead baseball catcher with Reading of the International League. Julian began his coaching career in 1925 at Schuylkill College (later Albright) as football coach and athletic director. He later coached football at Ashland (Pa.) High School; football and basketball at Muhlenberg College; and basketball at Holy Cross and Dartmouth. He was also a backfield coach with the Boston Yanks of the NFL in 1947 and was head coach of the Boston Celtics for two years from 1948-50. Elected to the National Basketball Hall of Fame and the Helms Athletic Foundation Basketball Hall of Fame, Julian led Holy Cross to the 1946-47 NCAA championship behind a young freshman guard named Bob Cousy. At Dartmouth, Julian won three Ivy League titles, and he won or tied for four Middle Atlantic Conference championships at Muhlenberg. Julian sent five of his teams to the NCAA Tournament and two more ot the NIT, he was called "the coach who could spot a mistake almost before it happens," and he authored a popular book called Bread and Butter Basketball.Â
