A football coach at Bucknell for six seasons and the university's director of athletics for 16 years, Al Humphreys played a vital role in the stability and growth of the Bucknell athletics program in the unsettled period after World War II. Humphreys guided the Bucknell football program from 1937-42 and again in 1946, compiling an overall record of 30-24-5. Under Humphreys, the Bison recorded three straight winning seasons from 1940-42, and his 1938 team was the last Bucknell football team to beat Penn State. More importantly, Humpheys served as AD at Bucknell from 1946 until his death in 1962, and he was instrumental in stabilizing and rebuilding the Bison athletics program in the years following the war. He was responsible for hiring several of Bucknell's finest coaches and administrators, including Hall-of-Famers Harry Lawrence, Hal Biggs, Bob Odell and Bob Latour. Nine of his former football players also have been inducted into the Hall.Â
