Update from Head Men's Golf Coach Mike Binney -- February 2024
Dear Bison Faithful,
I hope this update finds you well and surviving the winter months. At present, it is not terribly cold here in Lewisburg, Pa., and if truth be told, several of the guys got out to play today at BGC. The greens were a little rough but it’s the start of February and we are playing outside, so no complaints here.
We’ve spent the last two weeks practicing indoors at the Bachman Golf Center getting prepped for our first tilt in Puerto Rico. UNC Greensboro’s team is hosting the Palmas del Mar Collegiate at the Palmas del Mar resort next week, and we will be one of 16 teams competing in arguably the toughest field we will face all year!
Some teams we’ve played against before, including Boston College, Drexel, Temple, UConn, Michigan, and Rutgers, as well as some we haven’t, including UNCG, Arkansas, Elon, and Kennesaw State. Regardless of whether you have been following the Spikemark debacle last fall or not, we will be the lowest-ranked team in the field, so it’s a huge opportunity for us to knock off some of the big dogs in college golf, and the boys are ready for the challenge!
February will be a busy month as we will depart for Phoenix, Ariz., less than 10 days later for Loyola’s event in Goodyear at Palm Valley GC. It's an annual event for us, and one where we typically do fairly well, so we’re looking to build on our past successes there. There are some constants we can usually count on out there; warm weather (and dry too), and solid scores.
If that were not enough, the Bison squad has two more warm-climate events before it gets good enough to play here in PA. For Spring Break, we’re driving to Myrtle Beach to tee it up in Appalachian State’s event at the Surf Club, and then we fly to San Diego at the end of March to play in UCSD’s event at Torrey Pines. Last year in Myrtle Beach it was cold and windy, but last year’s event at Torrey was one of the highlights of the entire year. We hope for a repeat of everything we did and accomplished out there.
At the completion of these events, we will have one more regular season event in Ohio that will be co-hosted by Miami (Ohio) and Bowling Green. The event is the Highland Meadows Intercollegiate and will be contested at Highland Meadows in Sylvania, Ohio. The course used to host the Dana Open on the LPGA Tour, which was originally named the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic. For those of you who remember Jamie Farr, he played Klinger on MASH back in the 70’s!
I will keep this short as there is nothing to report on the team except to say that they are ready to get after it and play some tournament golf!
Go Bison,
Coach
