Update from Head Volleyball Coach Tyler Hagstrom -- March 2023

Dear Bison Volleyball Alumni, Family, and Friends,
Welcome to spring in Lewisburg! It has been a fairly mild winter for us so far, and we recently wrapped up the winter training portion of our spring semester. One new challenge: 6 a.m. strength and conditioning sessions every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Like all varsity sports on campus, we build our time in the weight room around our student-athletes'Â class schedules, and the only time this semester when the entire team could lift together just happened to be very early in the mornings. From everything I have seen so far, the team is absolutely crushing it with Coach Shirk. No yawns, no complaints; just high energy and lots of weights being thrown around, with movement and mobility exercises mixed in for good measure.
Moving from the winter training block into the spring also means more hours in the gym. We spent the winter focusing on positional groups, developing new habits, and paying attention to details in technical aspects of the game. We also found time to practice as a team once a week to make sure we are staying connected and incorporating our positional skills into a team dynamic. Now we will practice as a team four times a week, still continuing to improve our technique while also adding a lot of system work and developing stronger teammate skills.
The coaching staff also got back on the road to recruit more future Bison! Our roster continues to represent states from across the country, and we look forward to identifying the next class of student-athletes to represent Bucknell Volleyball. On that note, I am excited to make an official announcement regarding our incoming class! The Bucknell Volleyball Class of 2027 is comprised of five student-athletes: Sidney Shaffer from Orange, California, and Tstreet Volleyball Club; Riley Tucker from Clemmons, North Carolina, and Triangle Volleyball Club; Cameron Lloyd from Hillsborough, North Carolina, and Triangle Volleyball Club; Kaitlyn Taylor from Kissimmee, Florida, and Game Point Volleyball Club; and Skye Battino from New York, New York, and NYC Juniors Volleyball Club. We anticipate each of them making an impact right away and helping us to become more competitive in the practice gym and in matches. You are going to love watching them represent the Orange and Blue!
On behalf of the program, I would like to remind everyone that a very important day is coming later this month. On March 28-29, we will once again be in a battle with all the other athletic and recreation programs at Bucknell during the One Herd One Day giving challenge. The event has been critical in terms of raising funds for the program, and this year we hope Bucknell Volleyball can set new donor and dollar goals! In 2019 we established our high-water mark for donors with 93, and last year we set a new record for dollars raised at $28,313. Please help us spread the word to family and friends, and if you are able, support the young women in the program that day.Â
As always, thank you for your continued support!
