Bucknell University Athletics
Update from Head Women's Tennis Coach Tammy Cecchini
Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends,
Â
Happy 2023!
Â
We are back! Bucknell Women's Tennis is ready and prepared to start our 2023 spring season.Â
Â
Relaxed and refreshed after spending several deserving weeks at home for winter break, we eagerly returned to the courts for our first spring practice on Saturday, Jan. 14. The rest of the student body wasn't back yet at that time, and the campus has a special vibe when it's just the student-athletes.Â
Â
Our first practices have been spent working on our doubles teams. Junior Madi Sebulsky is recovering from knee surgery and first-year Abby Platt is being treated for a stress fracture in her back. Nothing too serious and I expect both to be back on the court soon. We did our first pacer test. We have 32 days to train before our annual Agility Workout & Pacer Test Competition with the football team takes place on March 7. It was a heartbreaking loss last year, and we don't plan on losing again this year.
Â
During our first week back we also had a Coach Reese workout, which is always a fan favorite, and ended the week with a mental performance session with our cognitive performance coach, Nick Fuller. After a strong week of practice, intense conditioning, and mental preparation, it was game time.
Â

On Saturday, Jan. 21, we traveled to East Brunswick, N.J., to face Rutgers in a match against one of the strongest teams we will play all season. It was a great way to measure ourselves early in the season. The competition did not get any easier, as we hit the road once again for our first Patriot League match at Boston University on Saturday, Jan. 28. The Terriers historically place first or second in the league each year.
Â
The following day we played the University of Rhode Island. What was exciting about this match is that we got to play at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Our team was able to enjoy the self-guided tour around the museum. Traveling is exciting, and I always try to include new schools in our schedule so we can explore new cities, try new foods, and see different campuses like BU and Rhode Island.
Â
On Saturday, Feb. 4, we don't have to travel too far to arrive at Saint Francis. This will be the first match for Will, our newly announced volunteer assistant coach.
Â
On Friday, Feb. 10, we hope to avoid all traffic as we venture into Washington, D.C., to play George Washington. Unfortunately, we will not have enough time to sightsee in the city. The following day we're at Washington & Lee. This is a special match for me because my son is a sophomore at W&L. He has promised me he will be cheering for Bucknell and will bring a cheering squad for us. I am so happy that the W&L head coach has agreed to save a spot on her schedule for us.
Â
We also have a very significant 24-hour period approaching for our program. The annual One Herd One Day 24-Hour Giving Challenge will be on March 28-29 from 10:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. I hope we can all come together in March to turn in a huge day for the women's tennis program.
Â
Practices, workouts, team dinners, and unofficial visits fill our calendar these next weeks. This is what the spring season is all about! Let's get to work!
