INTERPRETATION SKETCH FOR:
Ethical Conduct/Extra Benefits
PERMISSIBLE
Use of Local Fitness Center- Team may essentially "rent out" a local fitness center for weight training activities for specified times. Please note that transportation becomes an issue. During the declared season, the institution may transport student-athletes to the facility. They may not do so outside the playing season. Also, be careful, student-athletes cannot get an "all access" membership card to the facility.
Travel Home After Athletics Competition- Before a vacation period, a student-athlete can, at his/her own expense, directly travel from the event site to the student-athlete's home at his/her expense. The potential benefit of lessened travel costs is not an extra benefit as the "benefit" is viewed as incidental to participation.
Postage for Financial Aid Agreement- Institution may provide self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of a financial aid agreement.
Portfolio Production- The Office of Student Affairs, in conjunction with Career Services, may produce a portfolio or publication (e.g. corporate playbook) that can include resumes, pictures, etc. of student-athletes (only) that can be distributed to potential employers.
Snacks- Snacks may be provided to the student-athletes by the institution the night prior to a contest (seen as incidental to participation).
Calculators- Institution may provide calculators to student-athletes on an issuance and retrieval basis.
Day Planner- Institution may provide a day planner to student-athletes. Institution can out source the physical assembly of the day planner as long as the information is developed and produced by the institution.
IMPERMISSIBLE
Booster Lists- An institution may not give student-athletes a list of representatives of athletics interest for the purpose of contacting these individuals to participate in fundraising not specific to the athletic department (i.e. fundraising to go on tour with an outside organization).
Weight Room Fees During Summer- During the summer vacation period, if the institutional policy requires fee payment for use of athletic facilities (i.e. weight room) for the general public, the fees must be paid. A waiver of such a fee only for student-athletes is considered an extra benefit.
Injury During Official Visit- If a prospect is injured on an official visit, the member institution is precluded from paying the resulting medical expenses. Thus, the prospect assumes the expenses. The only exception is if the university maintains a comprehensive insurance policy that is applicable to all guests of the institution including nonathletes.
Parking- Institution cannot purchase parking spaces for student-athletes.
