ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Buoyed by a bronze-medal finish in the 4x800-meter relay, the Bucknell men's track and field team is in fourth place after the first of two days at the Patriot League Championships.
Bucknell compiled 14 points on Friday, just three behind third-place Boston University. Navy (93) and Army (75) distanced themselves from the field on day one, but there is a tight race for third, as Boston University, Bucknell, Lehigh (13), Colgate (10), and Lafayette (7) are separated by only 10 points. American (4) and Holy Cross (1) round out the field.
"It was a very solid day for the men. Our 4x800 medaled, which was great for them. I was very impressed with our freshman Brandon Foust, who made finals in the 100 and 200," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Feeney and Calisi threw great in the hammer, as well as Dresher on the javelin. Wolford-Tuffy and Sample survived and advanced in the 400, and it's great to see Scotto back in the high hurdles after injuring his collar bone back in February. Lynam advancing to 1500 is great as well, and Federovich is starting to put things together in long jump. Franco did a great job balancing open pole vault with the decathlon, as he scored in pole vault and is sitting seventh in decathlon. I believe Negrete and Brewer are in scoring positions sitting ninth and 11th. The rain all day was an obstacle, however, our men handled it very well."
The 4x800 relay unit of Thomas Matsumura, Alex Simpson, Samuel Whittaker, and Colby Belczyk clocked a time of 7:36.12, trailing only Navy and Army. The remainder of Bucknell's points on opening day came in field events, led by a sixth-place finish from Robert Feeney in the hammer throw. Feeney's top throw was 183 feet, 8 inches. John Calisi also scored in the hammer, placing eighth at 178-2.
In his first Patriot League meet, freshman Trevor Drescher placed seventh in the javelin throw with a mark of 173-8. Matt Federovich was eighth in the long jump at 22-5 ¾.
Franco Perinotti had a busy day. He is in seventh place in the decathlon with 3,110 points, and he also scored with an eighth-place finish in the open pole vault, clearing 15-0 ¼.
Miguel Negrete (9th, 3076) and Aiden Brewer (11th, 2781) are also in scoring contention in the decathlon.
Five other Bison advanced out of preliminary heats into Saturday finals. Brandon Foust moved on in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. He ran third in his heat and seventh overall in both events, clocking 10.92 in the 100 and 22.25 in the 200.
Two Bison qualified for the 400-meter dash final, as Ethan Wolford-Tuffy (49.34) and Rayven Sample (49.36) both placed second in their respective heats. Brian Scotto ran the 100-meter hurdles in 15.10 seconds, good for fourth in his heat and seventh overall, and Bobby Lynam grabbed the final qualifying spot in the 1,500 with a time of 3:58.45.
The Patriot League Championships wrap up on Saturday at the U.S. Naval Academy. Field events get underway at 9 a.m., with the first track event slated for 1:10 p.m. Points will be awarded in 16 events, culminating with the 4x400 relay at approximately 5:30 p.m.
