Bucknell Wrestling Competes at Prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational

LAS VEGAS, N.V. – The Bucknell wrestling team concluded its competition at the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Friday. Five Bison advanced out of the round of 32 in the championship bracket, and three reached the second consolation round of 8 Friday night.
Kurt Phipps (133), Nick Delp (157) and Nolan Springer (197) each picked up three wins to stay alive late into the evening. Phipps, Darren Miller (141), Kolby DePron (149), Delp and Luke Niemeyer (285) all collected wins in the round of 32 to begin the day in the championship bracket.
Phipps opened the day with an 8-4 decision over Hunter Leake of Cal Baptist before taking a loss to Arizona State's second-seeded Michael McGee in the round of 16. The junior went on to post an 8-2 decision over South Dakota State's Derrick Cardinal and a 9-3 decision against Columbia's Angelo Rini. He was eliminated from the consolation bracket by #4 seed and nationally-ranked Christopher Cannon of Northwestern.
Delp also picked up a round of 32 win in the championship bracket, posting an 11-3 major decision over Wyoming's Logan Ours. After dropping to the consolation bracket with a loss to #2 seed Peyton Robb of Nebraska, Delp posted his second major decision (8-0) of the day against Nebraska-Kearney's Briar Reisz and added another 4-0 decision over Edinboro's Lucas Kemerer in the first consolation round of 8.
Springer also finished the day with a 3-2 record, posting decisions over wrestlers from Harvard, The Citadel and Cal Baptist in the consolation bracket. He eventually ran into Navy's top-seeded wrestler, Jacob Koser, in the second round of 8.
Bucknell's top-seeded wrestler, #10 Miller, entered the weekend ranked No. 18/20 nationally and put up a fight in the championship round of 16 against Cornell's Vince Cornella. Cornella, also nationally ranked, was seeded seventh and took a 3-1 decision over Miller. Miller would go on to claim a 7-0 decision over Northwestern's Joel VanderVere in the consolation round of 16.
DePron and Niemeyer each posted pins in the championship round of 32, while Sam Barnes added points with a fall over Kent State's Michael Ferree in the consolation bracket.
The Bison as a whole faced 15 seeded opponents and challenged wrestlers from 7 ranked schools overall.
