CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Bucknell University men's track and field team competed on Saturday at the UVA Opener hosted by the Cavaliers in its first outdoor competition since 2019.

"It was a solid opener for both our men and our women," said Head Coach Kevin Donner. "It was great to have some sense of normalcy back after not having an indoor season. UVA is a Power Five program of the ACC that competes at a national level, and they had a full indoor season in addition to the ACC Championships not too long ago. They were very sharp. We were busting a lot of rust, and just getting a gauge at where we are. Many of our athletes responded great, and some other struggled today. I do anticipate seeing a lot of improvement in our tri meet next Sunday at home."
Bucknell earned four event victories on the day from Jordan Montero, Noah Martin, Tommy Cahill and Brendan Bodisch.
Montero earned the win in the javelin (195-8) to beat of Derek Pekar of Virginia (167-2). Martin earned the top spot in the 3000m steeplechase (9:52.91), while Bodisch placed first out of six runners in the 400m hurdles (55.49). Bodisch also placed third in the long jump (23-1.75).
Cahill cleared 6-3.75 to earn top honors in the high jump in his collegiate debut.
Griffin Schlegel earned runner-up honors in the 800 (1:57.68) in a field of seven, while Evan Minor made his season debut on the track after earning First Team All-Patriot League honors in cross country in the 5000 (14:54.11), finishing second.
Nicholas Marino, who was runner-up at the 2020 Indoor Championships, began his outdoor season by placing third in the pole vault (15-7). Anthony Zamarra, who earned the team award for Rookie of the Year, also finished runner-up in the shot put (52-2.75).
Jack Memoli placed second in the 110m hurdles (15.91), while also taking sixth in the 400m hurdles. Connor McMenamin, recently named to the Academic All-League squad in cross country, placed fourth in the 1500 (3:52.56).
The Bison will return to action on Sunday, March 28 when they host UMBC and Saint Francis (Pa.) for a tri-meet at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
