ST. LOUIS – Bucknell's Zach Hartman secured All-America accolades by advancing to the semifinals in the 165-pound weight class at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, which continued on Friday at the Enterprise Center.
Hartman became the sixth Bison wrestler to earn All-America laurels, joining Tom Marchetti (167, 1989), Bryan Burns (190, 1991), Bobby Ferraro (177, 1994 & 1995), Andy Rendos (165, 2009 & 2010) and current assistant coach Kevin LeValley (149, 2010 & 2011). In addition, he joined Marchetti as Bucknell's second NCAA semifinalist.
Hartman will face sixth-seeded Keegan O'Toole (Missouri) for a spot in the third-place bout on Saturday. He can finish no lower than sixth at this year's NCAA Championships.
At the end of the second period in their semifinal bout, Hartman trailed Griffith by a 2-1 margin. Though Hartman escaped early in the final frame to even the score at 2-2, Griffith had over a minute of riding time to his credit. Needing to score, Hartman took multiple shots; with less than 30 seconds remaining, Griffith took advantage of Hartman losing his balance on a chance to pick up a takedown and four back points.
Yesterday, Hartman went 2-0 with an 8-6 decision over 28th-seeded Rodrick Mosley (Gardner-Webb) and a 6-0 decision over 21st-seeded Peyton Hall (West Virginia).
Hartman was previously selected as a 2020 Honorable Mention All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. During the 2019-20 campaign, he went 27-8 (13-1 dual). He qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second-straight season by finishing as the EIWA runner-up; he would have been the 16th seed at that year's NCAA Championships, which were not held due to the COVID-19 public health threat.
Marchetti became Bucknell's very first All-American by placing fourth in the 167-pound weight class at the 1989 NCAA Championships. Then a sophomore, he reached the semifinals by winning his first three bouts, including one by fall. In the semifinals, he fell to the eventual champion, Dave Lee (Wisconsin). He advanced to the third-place bout with another pin; in the third-place match, he was topped by Mike Farrell (Oklahoma State).
The NCAA Championships conclude tomorrow, with the medal rounds beginning at 11 a.m.
