LEWISBURG, Pa. – Kurt Phipps was honored as the EIWA Wrestler of the Week following his performance during the Bucknell wrestling team's tri-dual with Buffalo and Lock Haven.
In addition, Phipps became the first wrestler to be recognized as the Bison Athlete of the Week this school year.
During the Bison's opening dual with Buffalo, Phipps knocked off then No. 29 Derek Spann by a 9-5 decision. Notably, Spann is a two-time NCAA qualifier and three-time placewinner at the MAC Championships.
Later in the afternoon during Bucknell's 21-15 victory over the Bald Eagles, Phipps picked up a commanding 10-1 major decision over Matt Maloney. The sophomore racked up 2:04 of riding time en route to his fifth dual victory of the season.
This is the first season the EIWA has awarded Wrestler of the Week accolades, making Phipps the first Bison to receive them. During the abbreviated 2020-21 campaign, Vincent Andreano (Jan. 4), Darren Miller (Jan. 24) and Zach Hartman (Feb. 28 & Mar. 21) all captured Bison Athlete of the Week laurels.
Phipps's older brother, Drew '20, graduated as a three-time Bison Athlete of the Week. The elder Phipps was honored once each during his sophomore, junior and senior years, with his final nod coming after his runner-up showing in the 197-pound weight class at the 2020 EIWA Championships. His first Bison Athlete of the Week award came after he upset then No. 16 C.J. LaFragola (Brown), 6-4, in overtime to earn his first career win over a ranked opponent.
Phipps and the Bison next attend the prestigious Ken Kraft Midlands Championships from Dec. 29-30.
