Three Bison also made the third NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell's Zach Hartman, Matthew Kolonia and Drew Phipps appeared in the second NCAA rating percentage index.Â
In addition, Hartman, Phipps and Darren Miller made the third of four NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings, which, in conjunction with the rating percentage index, are used in the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2020 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
In the RPI, Hartman (165) checked in at 23rd, Phipps (197) at 29th and Kolonia (149) at 33rd. In the NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings, Hartman was tied for 15th, Phipps at 27th and Miller (133) at 33rd.
In addition, the NCAA revealed the qualifier allocations for the 2020 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The EIWA will have 44 automatic qualifiers, ranking behind only the Big Ten (79) and Big 12 (54).
Hartman, who moved up a weight class in 2019-20, wrapped up the regular season with a 24-7 overall record. He went an impressive 13-1 in duals, including 9-1 against EIWA competition. In addition, he is the team leader in pins (8) and technical falls (3). He notably placed sixth at the prestigious Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in late December.
Phipps has had a stellar senior year, going 28-6 to date. He set a new career high in overall victories, a figure that currently leads the Bison. In addition, he went 14-2 in dual competition, including a 10-2 mark against EIWA foes. To date, Phipps has placed first at two invitationals: November's Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open and January's David H. Lehman F&M Open. He will enter the EIWA Championships needing just four victories to become the 11th Bison to reach the century mark in his collegiate career.
Kolonia has enjoyed a breakout junior year, posting a 17-7 record through the regular season. He went 10-5 in duals, including 9-2 record against EIWA opponents. He also placed second at November's Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open and third at November's Navy Classic.
Miller has excelled as a freshman, posting an 18-13 record to date. He went 10-6 in dual competition, including 9-3 against EIWA foes. Like Phipps and Kolonia, he made the podium at November's Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open, taking third.
Wrestlers in each weight class are measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches' rankings to earn spots in their qualifying tournaments for the 2020 NCAA Championships, slated for March 19-21 at U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, Minn. The coaches' rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches could only consider a wrestler that was designated as a starter at a respective weight class. To be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.
