LEWISBURG, Pa. – Drew Phipps was selected as the Bison Athlete of the Week for the second time in his career after upsetting the nation's fourth-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds.
During the Bucknell wrestling team's dual at Army West Point, Phipps stunned Rocco Caywood by a 7-3 decision, bolstered by a two-point nearfall and a late takedown during the second period. It was Phipps's second career victory over a nationally ranked wrestler and his first at 197 pounds; a year ago, he knocked off No. 16 C.J. LaFragola of Brown, 6-4, in sudden victory overtime at 184 pounds.
Entering his bout with Phipps, Caywood boasted a 21-3 record, including an unblemished 7-0 mark in duals. Two of the senior's losses came to nationally ranked wrestlers.
Over the weekend, Phipps also bested American's Prince Hyeamang by a commanding 14-0 major decision. It was his team-best fifth major decision on the 2018-19 campaign.
Phipps now boasts a 19-7 record, including a 12-3 mark in duals. He ranks behind only Zach Hartman (157) in overall victories and is tied with the standout freshman in dual victories. He will ride a team-best nine-bout winning streak, over which he collected bonus points in four bouts, into this Friday's 7 p.m. dual at Binghamton.
Phipps was previously honored as the Bison Athlete of the Week following his upset of LaFragola. He is the second wrestler to be voted as the Bison Athlete of the Week this school year, joining Hartman. Hartman was recognized on Dec. 30 after taking third in the 157-pound weight class with a 6-1 record at the prestigious Ken Kraft Midlands Championships.
