LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell's Zach Hartman and Joey Gould appeared in the first of four NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings, which are used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
Hartman, a freshman with four victories over nationally ranked foes, was slotted 10th in the 157-pound weight class. Gould, a former EIWA placewinner at 133 pounds, was ranked 29th at 141 pounds. Both previously placed at the prestigious Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, with Hartman claiming third with a 6-1 record and Gould taking fifth with a 5-2 mark.
Hartman currently boasts a 16-4 record, including a 7-2 mark in dual competition. The team leader in overall and dual victories, he is also tied for the team high in pins, one of which was of a nationally ranked grappler. To date, he has faced eight ranked opponents and holds a 4-4 record against them; all four of his losses, his only ones of the campaign, were to wrestlers slotted in Intermat's top 10.
Hartman enters this Saturday's duals at Sacred Heart (12 p.m.) and Hofstra (7 p.m.) ranked eighth by Intermat and The Open Mat and ninth by FloWrestling. He was the only freshman listed in the top 10 at 157 pounds in any of the three aforementioned polls, just as he was in the NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings. He was also the top EIWA wrestler at 157 pounds in the NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings, eight spots ahead of Lehigh's Josh Humphreys.
Gould currently stands 7-5 on the season with two major decisions and one pin. The junior's signature win to date came at the Midlands Championships, where he knocked off then No. 14 Tristan Moran out of Wisconsin by a 9-1 major decision. He was one of six EIWA grapplers who made the NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings and was slotted ahead of two of them.
Wrestlers in each weight class are measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches' rankings to earn spots in their qualifying tournaments for the 2019 NCAA Championships, slated for March 21-23 at PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, Pa. The coaches' rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches could only consider a wrestler that was designated as a starter at a respective weight class. To be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.
