WASHINGTON, D.C./FAIRFAX, Va. – Tyler Smith, Victor Lopez, Rustin Barrick, Tom Sleigh and Joe Stolfi each won two bouts to lead the Bucknell wrestling team to a couple of road victories Saturday. The Bison opened the day with a 24-16 win against EIWA foe American and then traveled a short distance west to take on George Mason in a non-conference match and defeated the Patriots 32-12.
Bucknell (10-5, 4-2 EIWA) extended its winning streak to four matches. The Bison have won those four matches by a combined total of 102 points.
Bucknell won 13 of the 18 contested bouts in the two duals on Saturday. The Bison totaled four pins, two tech falls and a major decision.
In the opener against American (4-8, 1-6 EIWA), Grim Gonzalez opened the scoring for Bucknell at 133 pounds with his first fall of the year. Smith and Lopez followed with wins by decision to stake the Bison to a 12-6 lead. The Eagles then claimed the 157 and 165 bouts, but Bucknell won three of the last four on its way to the eight-point win. It marked the third straight Bison victory in the series.
A win by Barrick at 174 pounds gave Bucknell the lead (15-13) for good and extended his personal winning streak to 12, which he later upped to 13. Sleigh, who defeated Jason Grimes 5-4 on the riding time point at 184 pounds, and Stolfi, who sealed the outcome with a pin of Jake Scanlan, earned the other wins for the Bison. It was Stolfi's team-high ninth pin of the season.
George Mason (7-11) opened the nightcap with a win by forfeit at 125 and a 19-18 decision at 133 pounds to start up 9-0. The Bison captured seven of the final eight bouts, including the final five in a row. Smith and Lopez recorded back-to-back pins at 141 and 149, while Sleigh and Tyler Greene had consecutive tech falls at 184 and 197.
Stolfi concluded the match with a 12-3 major decision over Matt Voss as he improved to 15-1 on the season.
Nationally ranked Paul Petrov was unable to weight in at 125 pounds for the Bison due to sickness.
Saturday's matches were just the beginning of competition this weekend for Bucknell, which has reached double-figures in victories for a program-record third consecutive season. The Bison will wrestle at EIWA opponent Penn on Sunday at 3 p.m.
