Wrestling Splits with Brown and Harvard, Petrov Earns 100th Career Win

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Paul Petrov posted a convincing 9-0 major decision over Mike Russo in the opening bout of the day to become the eighth Bison to register 100 career wins as he helped lead the Bucknell wrestling team to a 27-15 victory over EIWA opponent Brown Saturday afternoon in Davis Gym. Shortly afterward, the Bison faced Harvard and lost to the Crimson by a 26-21 score in a match that featured three falls, two forfeits and a tech fall.
Thirteen different Bison saw action in the two matches and Bucknell's heavier weights were strong as Rustin Barrick (174), Tom Sleigh (184), Tyler Greene (197) and Joe Stolfi (285) were each credited with two victories on the day.
Petrov, who was honored between matches along with Stolfi for reaching 100 career wins, improved to 23-4 on the season as he also earned a forfeit. He is now 101-34 in his career.
The Brown (2-6, 2-4 EIWA) match was back-and-forth early on as the teams alternated wins over the first four bouts. Petrov and Tyler Smith posted major decisions, but the Bears held a 15-8 edge through six bouts. Barrick followed with a pin of Richard Muniz in 2:22, Sleigh scored a 19-6 major decision eight back points and Greene posted an exciting last-second 9-7 decision against Augustus Marker to virtually clinch the outcome in the team score.
Greene scored six of his nine points against Marker in the final period as he scored a takedown and on two occasions was awarded a pair of back points. Greene led 7-6 late in the period when Marker earned a penalty point, but Greene responded with a two-point near fall with less than 10 seconds to go to clinch the victory.
Stolfi led Ian Butterbrodt 8-4 in the third period when Butterbrodt suffered an injury and had to default with just over a minute to go in the final period. Stofli added a forfeit win against Harvard and moved into sole possession of fifth place on Bucknell's all-time wins list with a career record of 110-38.
Bucknell (6-5, 2-2 EIWA) and Harvard (4-2, 2-1 EIWA) each earned five wins in the nightcap, but the Crimson benefitted from three pins and a tech fall.
Barrick, Sleigh and Greene each posted decisions against the Crimson, winning by a combined 22-7 score. The closest bout of the match was at 149 pounds where Victor Lopez lost by three points to Patrick Hogan.
Barrick's 6-2 win over Josef Johnson extended his personal winning streak to nine, while Sleigh's physical 8-2 decision vs. Michael Mocco was his fifth win in a row. Greene again did most of his damage in the third period, scoring four of his points in an 8-3 decision in the final stanza.
Perhaps the most anticipated match of the Bucknell-Harvard competition came at 141 pounds and it featured nationally ranked Tyler Smith for the Bison against top-10 ranked Todd Preston for the Crimson. It was a close bout throughout, but Preston scored a late fall against Smith with just 10 seconds remaining.
Bucknell is now 2-2 on its current five-match homestand. The Bison will wrap up their home schedule next Sunday, Jan. 31, when they host Bloomsburg in Davis Gym. The match will air live on the Patriot League Network.
