LEWISBURG, Pa. – The 22nd-ranked Bucknell wrestling team was looking to win its 11th consecutive match and equal the program record for the longest winning streak Friday evening at Davis Gym against Binghamton. The Bison nearly led wire-to-wire, but a last-second victory by the Bearcats' Tyler Deuel in the heavyweight bout game them their first lead and made the final score 18-16.
Bucknell (15-4, 8-1 EIWA) built an early 13-0 lead and still had a one-point advantage (16-15) entering the final bout of the night between No. 10 Joe Stolfi and No. 20 Deuel. It was undecided if Stolfi or fellow heavyweight Chuck Boddy would wrestle due to a slight injury to Stolfi, but he took the mat with a personal 20-match winning streak. Deuel jumped on top 4-0 in the first period, but Stolfi bounced back with an escape, takedown and two back points in the second period to build a 6-4 advantage entering the final period.
Deuel evened the score with a takedown with approximately 45 seconds left in the bout. And then a crazy final few seconds decided both the bout and the match. With a vocal crowd making its presence known in the closing seconds, Deuel scored two back points and Stolfi followed with a reversal to tie the score at 8-8. However, Deuel earned the victory and clinched the match based on 1:38 of riding time.
The Bison built their early cushion thanks to wins in the first four bouts. No. 19 Paul Petrov started it off with a 5-3 OT victory over David White at 125 pounds. His riding time sent it to overtime, but Petrov prevailed in the second sudden victory session.
Grim Gonzalez followed with a 10-6 decision at 133 pounds in a bout that at one point had a chance at being a major decision until Joe Nelson scored a takedown with 25 seconds remaining in the third period.
Tyler Smith followed with a 6-0 shutout of Dylan Caruana at 141. Four of Smith's points came in the third period.
Victor Lopez then registered the first bonus-point win of the night with a 12-4 victory at 149. He scored a three-point near fall with 40 seconds left in the bout and the riding time point pushed it to a major.
From that point on, though, Bucknell would register just one more victory as Binghamton (8-10, 5-4 EIWA) captured five of the final six bouts. The big swing was Bucknell's Logan Kerin needing to injury default at 157 pounds. The Bearcats' other four wins were by decision and none were by more than three points.
Bucknell's other victory came at 184 pounds when freshman Tom Sleigh posted his 27th win of the year by a 3-0 shutout. His points came on a second-period escape and a third-period takedown in the closing seconds.
The Bison will wrap up the regular season Sunday at VMI. Match time is 2 p.m.
