LEWISBURG, Pa. – Joe Stolfi and Tyler Smith recorded pins and Bucknell won eight of the 10 bouts as it stretched its winning streak to nine matches with a 33-6 win over Franklin & Marshall Friday evening at Davis Gym. The Bison, who had already established a program record for victories in a season, improved to 14-3 overall and remained unbeaten (7-0) against EIWA foes.
“This was a good dual win,” commented Bucknell head coach Dan Wirnsberger. “Winning eight of 10 bouts shows the consistency in our lineup. Both of our losses were by just one point. We would like to see those results turned around, but we battled and will now get ready for tomorrow's match vs. Army.”
The match started at 197 pounds and the Bison fell behind 3-0 in the team score as Franklin & Marshall's (2-8, 1-5 EIWA) Charles Kerkesner defeated Tyler Lyster by a 6-5 margin with all 11 points in the bout scored in the first period. Lyster was on top the entire second period, but was unable to turn Kerkesner, while the roles were reversed in the third period. There was plenty of action in the final period with Lyster nearly escaping a number of times, but he couldn't work his way free.
Bucknell then won the next five bouts with the streak started by Stolfi's 17th pin of the season. He built a 13-1 first-period lead on Alex Henry and then recorded the pin with seven seconds left in the first period. It was his 19th straight victory and his 49th career pin, putting him one shy of equaling the school's career record.
Paul Petrov followed with a 9-1 major decision at 125 pounds and Grim Gonzalez held on for a 10-9 decision at 133. He led 9-6 entering the final seconds, but a quick escape and a takedown by Patrick Quinlan knotted the score at 9-9. Gonzalez earned the riding time point, though, for his 17th win this season.
An exuberant Smith then notched his fourth fall of the year, pinning Robert Ruiz in 1:37. The freshman is now 8-1 in his last nine bouts.
A 12-2 major decision by Victor Lopez at 149 pounds staked Bucknell to a commanding 23-3 lead. Lopez totaled 4:38 in riding time as he dominated Tommy Quinlan.
After a one-point loss at 157, the Bison had three straight victories to close the dual as Robert Schlitt (165) and Joey Krulock (174) posted decisions and Tom Sleigh scored eight takedowns in a 17-6 major at 184.
Friday's match was the first of two at home this weekend for the Bison, who host Army Saturday at 2 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on Bison Vision on the Patriot League Network.
