LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell wrestling team posted an impressive 3-0 record this past weekend with victories over No. 10 Virginia, Davidson and Hofstra. Senior captain Tyler Lyster (Wanamassa, N.J./Ocean Township) was one of three Bison to walk away from the weekend with a perfect 3-0 mark and for his performance was named the 5th Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.
Lyster, who is now 14-9 on the season, opened the weekend with a pivotal win in Saturday's home opener against the nationally ranked Cavaliers. Bucknell (3-1, 1-0 EIWA) trailed 16-13 with two bouts remaining with Lyster taking the mat for the 197-pound match. He proceeded to post a thrilling 5-3 overtime win against No. 16 Zach Nye that tied the score and gave heavyweight Joe Stolfi a chance to clinch the win. It was Lyster's second career win over a nationally ranked opponent.
A winner of 65 career matches, Lyster followed with two 3-0 decisions Sunday at the Grapple at the Garden. He opened the day with a win over Davidson's Ian Solcz and concluded it with a victory over Hofstra's Mike Oxley that gave Bucknell a 22-15 lead over the Pride and clinched the outcome of the match.
Lyster is tied for second on the team in wins this year, while his career victory total is also second among current Bison.
Bucknell's strong weekend helped head coach Dan Wirnsberger record his 100th career win in Sunday's nightcap vs. Hofstra.
The Bison will be back in action Jan. 4 when they travel to East Lansing, Mich., for a dual at Michigan State.
