LEWISBURG, Pa. – Paul Petrov and Joe Stolfi each notched his team-high 20th victory of the year on Sunday, but the Bucknell wrestling team dropped a 24-13 decision to Penn in Davis Gym. The Bison, who defeated Brown and Clarion on Saturday, finished their three-match home weekend with a 2-1 mark and they are now 5-7 overall and 2-1 against EIWA foes on the season.
Bucknell won four matches against Penn, but the Quakers used four bonus-point victories to capture the 11-point victory. Petrov opened the match with a major decision at 125 for the Bison, who also received decisions from Victor Lopez at 149, Joey Krulock at 174 and Stolfi at 285. Petrov and Stolfi, who own matching 20-6 records this year, lead the squad in victories.
Petrov registered his sixth consecutive bonus-point win as he dominated Jeremy Schwartz in a 14-4 major decision. He led 10-3 after two periods and finished the bout with five takedowns and one reversal. Petrov is now 15-2 in his last 17 outings and has five wins by major decision this year.
Stolfi concluded the match with an 8-1 decision over Steven Graziano. After a scoreless first 4:40 that did not involve much action at all, Stolfi scored a takedown in the closing seconds of the second period. He added an escape, two takedowns and riding time in the final period for the 8-1 win. It marked Stolfi's first win by decision this year. His first 19 victories were by major decision (3), fall (15) and forfeit (1).
Lopez and Krulock both had one-point decisions for Bucknell's other wins. Lopez earned the riding time point to break a 4-4 tie with A.J. Murabito and win by a 5-4 score, while Krulock won in the first tiebreaker round by a 2-1 score over Zach Agostino. Agostino earned a second-period escape, while Krulock scored an escape in the third period as they entered the sudden victory session tied 1-1. Neither grappler scored in the one-minute period, forcing the bout to head to the tiebreaker. Krulock was able to hold onto Agostino and not allow an escape during the first 30 seconds. Then, with his turn on the bottom, Krulock was able to escape with just a few seconds to spare after shaking his legs free from Agostino's grasp.
The outcome of the match was in doubt until the 197-pound bout when Frank Mattiace defeated Tyler Lyster 4-2. It was a close one as Lyster trailed 3-2 in the closing seconds of the third period and was earning riding time. If he was able to stay on top until the end, he would have earned the riding time point. However, Mattiace broke free with less than five seconds left in the period and with Lyster's riding time at 59 seconds.
Bucknell will return to action Friday, Jan. 24, at Columbia. The EIWA match will begin at 7 p.m.
