WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Bucknell baseball team concluded its week-long trip to Florida with a 17-2 loss to Northwestern Saturday morning at Chain of Lakes Park. The game was shortened to seven innings after the Wildcats built their advantage.
Northwestern (7-5) pitcher Brandon Magallones improved to 2-1 on the season as he pitched 3.0 innings and allowed three hits and a pair of Bison runs. Reed Mason was on the mound for the final two innings and did not allow a hit.
Bucknell (4-13) used five pitchers in the contest and yielded just six earned runs. However, six Bison errors led to 11 unearned runs for the Wildcats. Starter Dan Goldstein (2-3) suffered the loss. Freshman reliever Max Kra bounced back from his performance Friday vs. nationally ranked Indiana by retiring Northwestern in order in the top of the seventh.
The Wildcats scored two runs in the first, second and sixth innings and three in the fourth but their big frame was an eight-run fifth as they capitalized on five hits, two walks, a hit by pitch and two errors.
Freshman Joe Ogren provided the offense for Bucknell as he knocked in two runs on a two-out double in the bottom of the third. Corey Furman and Robb Scott also had hits. Furman, who was 1-for-2 Saturday, was 8-for-10 over the final three games in Florida.
Nick Linne drove in three runs for Northwestern, while Trevor Stevens, Zach Morton and Zach Jones had two RBIs apiece. Morton's three hits were a team high.
The Bison finished their seven-game Florida trip with a 3-4 record after winning their first three contests. Bucknell is scheduled to play its first home game of the season Tuesday, March 19, against Saint Joseph's. First pitch at Depew Field is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
