WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Bucknell wrestling team captured five of the nine contested bouts, but American capitalized on a forfeit at 125 pounds and a pin by Kevin Tao at 149 to defeat the Bison 21-17 Saturday evening at Bender Arena. Four of Bucknell's five victories were by decision as bonus points helped the Eagles to victory.
The match came down to the final bout as heavyweights Joe Stolfi (Bucknell) and Blake Herrin (American) took to the mat with the Eagles up 18-17. Herrin posted a 7-4 decision over Stolfi to clinch the match for American.
Back-to-back decisions at 133 and 141 by Paul Petrov and Derrik Russell brought Bucknell back to even at 6-6 after the opening forfeit at 125. However, Tao then recorded his pin of Adam Healey to make it 12-6.
Vincent Favia and Corey Lear followed with two more decisions for the Bison to even the score once again, but American (7-7, 2-4 EIWA) answered with decisions at 174 and 184.
A 15-0 tech fall by Tyler Lyster at 197 gave the Bison a chance to win heading into the final bout, but Bucknell never took the lead in the team score.
Petrov's win was his ninth in his last 11 bouts, while Lear improved to 17-2 in his last 19.
The Bison, who are now 6-13 overall and 2-4 against EIWA competition, will wrap up their regular season Friday against Lehigh in Davis Gym. Start time is 7 p.m. and there is free admission.
