LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman 141-pounder Victor Lopez (Poway, Calif./Poway) was named Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday following two wins by fall against ranked opponents this past weekend. The rookie posted pins against his foes from No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 5 Oklahoma in duals that were just a few hours apart.
Bucknell (2-3, 1-0 EIWA) faced a pair of top-five ranked opponents Sunday in the Cowboys and Sooners and Lopez earned the team's only victories. He opened the day with a pin in 4:50 against Oklahoma State's 16th-ranked redshirt junior Julian Feikert and then followed that with a pin of Oklahoma redshirt senior and No. 12-ranked Nick Lester in 5:56. Lester was an All-American two years ago.
Lopez improved to 8-4 on the season with his two victories Sunday. They were his first two career wins by fall as he evened his record against ranked foes at 2-2. Lopez has won six of his last seven bouts and is the only Bison with more than four victories this season.
One of four freshman in the Bucknell starting lineup, Lopez is one of just two Bison to have multiple wins by fall this season.
Lopez marks the second straight wrestler to be named Bison Athlete of the Week. Senior Alex Pellicciotti earned the award last week after posting a win over a ranked opponent in Bucknell's one-point win over nationally ranked Lehigh.
Bucknell will be back in action this Saturday, Nov. 23, when it makes its annual trek to the Navy Classic.
