Bucknell Wrestling Drops Decisions at Michigan State and No. 9 Central Michigan

EAST LANSING, Mich./MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Bucknell wrestling team returned to the mat for the first time in nearly three weeks Sunday as it traveled to Michigan to face Michigan State and No. 9 Central Michigan. The Bison lost the opener to the Spartans by a 28-11 score, then traveled approximately an hour north and dropped a 35-3 decision to the nationally ranked Chippewas.
Bucknell (2-5), which has faced three top-10 opponents in its last four matches, was wrestling without two starters in its lineup as nationally ranked 165-pounder Corey Lear and 174-pounder Stephen McPeek were held out of the duals with injuries. The Bison ended up forfeiting at 174 pounds in both of Sunday's matches.
Four of Bucknell's nine wrestlers on Sunday ended up collecting a win. Austin Miller, Paul Petrov and Derrik Russell posted wins against Michigan State, while Adam Healey registered the Bison win opposite Central Michigan.
The day started out well for Bucknell as Miller (125), Petrov (133) and Russell (141) won the first three bouts against the Spartans to stake the Bison to an 11-0 lead. Petrov's victory was his first tech fall of the year. Michigan State then won the final six bouts and earned six points for the 174-pound forfeit.
Healey, a 149-pounder, posted Bucknell's lone win against Central Michigan with a 2-0 decision over Donnie Corby. Miller, Petrov and Russell each tried to earn his second win of the day, but each lost by a two-point decision against the Chippewas.
Michigan State (4-2) had two ranked wrestlers in its lineup, while Central Michigan (5-2) had three ranked grapplers.
Bucknell will be back in action next weekend when it competes at the Virginia Duals for a sixth consecutive season. The two-day event begins Friday, Jan. 11, in Hampton, Va.
