PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Freshmen Paul Petrov and Vincent Favia posted wins by decision and sophomore Joe Stolfi extended his personal winning streak to seven bouts, but the Bucknell wrestling team was unable to win a second straight match as it fell by a 23-10 score to No. 24 Penn. The Bison fell to 5-9 overall and 2-2 against EIWA competition, while the Quakers upped their season record to 5-3, 2-1 EIWA.
Penn was the sixth ranked opponent Bucknell has faced this season. The Quakers, who lost to Cornell on Saturday, had three ranked wrestlers in their lineup with No. 15 Mark Rappo at 125, No. 10 C.J. Cobb at 141 and No. 9 Micah Burak at 197.
Wrestling at 133 pounds, Petrov got the Bison on the board with a 6-3 decision over Jeff Canfora. It was Petrov's fifth win in his last six bouts as he improved to 14-9 on the season and 3-1 in EIWA duals.
Cobb posted a major decision against Derrik Russell at 141 and Andrew Lenzi registered an 11-6 decision over Adam Healey at 149 before Favia brought Bucknell back to within 10-6 with an overtime win. He won by a 3-1 score in sudden victory over Troy Hernandez. It was Favia's first career overtime victory as he won his second straight bout after a 7-1 decision Friday against Franklin & Marshall.
No. 15-ranked Corey Lear took to the mat at 165 for the Bison as he looked to win for a 14th consecutive time. However, he dropped a 5-3 decision to Casey Kent, starting a string of four straight wins for the Quakers, who built a 23-6 advantage heading into the heavyweight bout.
Stolfi ended the match on a high note for Bucknell as he registered a 9-0 major decision to extend his winning streak to a team-best seven straight. He is now 4-0 in EIWA duals and evened his career record at .500.
Bucknell will return home Saturday to begin a three-match homestand. The Bison will host George Mason at noon in Davis Gym. The match will be broadcast live on Bison Vision.
