LEWISBURG, Pa. - Less than 24 hours after defeating Columbia by double figures, the Bucknell wrestling team hosted Army Saturday afternoon in Davis Gym and lost to the Black Knights by a 28-9 score. Austin Miller began the match with a pin and Joe Stolfi ended with a win by decision for the Bison, but Army (4-4, 1-1 EIWA) claimed the middle eight bouts for the victory.
Miller, a 125-pound sophomore, upped his record to 10-6 on the year as he pinned Nathan Santhanam in 6:23 to open the match. It was the fourth straight victory for Miller, who led by a 10-2 margin at the time of the pin.
"It's great to start a match with Miller and the energy he brings," commented Bison head coach Dan Wirnsberger. "Anytime you can start a dual with a pin it's a good thing from both an individual and team perspective. Unfortunately it didn't carry over to the rest of the team.
"To start and end a match with wins is a good feeling as a coach, but overall today we were a different team than last night."
Stolfi extended his personal winning streak to five matches as he defeated Stephen Snyder 3-0 in the final bout of the afternoon. A third-period takedown sealed the victory for Stolfi, who improved to 12-11 on the season.
Bucknell (4-8, 1-1 EIWA) did have a chance at a victory at 174 pounds, but Stephen McPeek suffered an injury with 11 seconds left in the first period while ahead 7-4 on the scoreboard and his day came to an end. Also, Adam Healey went to overtime with John Belanger at 149 pounds, but lost 3-1 as Belanger scored a takedown with 18 seconds left in the one-minute sudden-victory period.
Bucknell, which is in the midst of wrestling six out of seven matches at home, will return to action Friday, Jan. 25, when it hosts Franklin & Marshall at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on Bison Vision.
