LEWISBURG, Pa. - Joe Stolfi (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton), a sophomore heavyweight on the Bucknell wrestling team, has been named the Bison Athlete of the Week after a perfect 3-0 weekend at the Virginia Duals. Among Stolfi's wins was a clutch 2-1 decision that clinched a 20-16 team victory over Buffalo on Friday.
Stolfi started the tournament with a pin against Patrick Gillen of 19th-ranked Virginia. Stolfi and Gillen were locked up in a scoreless battle in the second period when Stolfi put Gillen on his back and earned his third win by fall of the season.
In the Buffalo dual later that day, Bucknell trailed 16-12 with just two bouts remaining. But 197-pounder Tyler Lyster won by technical fall to put the Bison in front 17-16, and then Stolfi came through with a clutch 2-1 decision over Justin Heiserman. Stolfi rode out Heiserman for the entire third period to secure the win.
Bucknell dropped a close 20-16 verdict against No. 25 Old Dominion on Saturday, but Stolfi came up with his third win of the weekend, 6-5 over Matt Tourdot, who was 17-9 coming in. Stolfi and Tourdot alternated takedowns and were knotted up at 4-4 in the third period. Stolfi's third takedown of the bout snapped a 4-4 tie with 45 seconds to go. Tourdot tacked on the riding point, but it wasn't enough.
Stolfi is now 10-11 on the season. The Bison now have six of their next seven duals at home, beginning with Columbia on Friday at 7 p.m. in Davis Gym. Bucknell will also wrestle Army in Davis Gym on Saturday at 4 p.m. Both matches will be webcast live on Bison Vision.
