PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Bucknell and Saint Joseph's baseball teams wrapped up a four-game weekend series Sunday with the Hawks defeating the visiting Bison by a 7-1 score at Maguire Campus Field. Saint Joseph's starter Tim Ponto logged 7.0 innings and limited Bucknell to six hits and one run before a pair of relievers pitched a scoreless final two innings to salvage a split of the series.
The Hawks scored four runs on five hits off Bucknell starter Dan Goldstein (0-1) in the fourth inning and three more runs in the seventh on a bases-clearing double by Lansing Veeder in the seventh.
Bucknell's (11-10) lone run came in the top of the seventh when Scott Reed reached on a leadoff double down the left-field line, advanced to third on a fly out and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Robb Scott, who was one of six Bison to have at least one hit in the contest. Gerry Runyan's 2-for-4 performance at the plate led the way for Bucknell.
The Bison could not get their offense going against Ponto (1-0) and relievers Daniel Thorpe and Veeder despite having the leadoff hitter reach in five of the nine innings. Three of Bucknell's first four hitters in the top of the first reached to load the bases, but the Bison advanced a runner as far as second base just three more times the rest of the game.
RBI singles by Veeder and Anthony Cirillo, as well as a two-run single by Mike Muha, keyed the four-run fourth inning for Saint Joseph's (6-18). Goldstein, who pitched 4.1 innings, battled through it and Muha was gunned down at second trying to steal to end the frame. Goldstein retired the leadoff hitter in the fifth, but then allowed a single and a walk before being removed in favor of reliever Jack Boehm.
Boehm started well, retiring six of the first seven hitters he faced and not allowing a hit until his third inning of work. However, back-to-back singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases and set the stage for Veeder's three-run double in the seventh. Veeder, who started the game in right field, was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored.
The Hawks tallied 12 hits in the game against four Bison pitchers. All nine starters accumulated at least one hit.
Despite the loss, Bucknell is still a solid 6-3 on the road this year.
The Bison will commence a seven-game homestand Tuesday when they host Binghamton in a doubleheader at Depew Field. First pitch is 1 p.m.
