LAKELAND, Fla. - Nebraska-Omaha used the momentum it gained by winning a 19-inning game against Long Island on Thursday to defeat the Bucknell baseball team by a 13-1 score Friday afternoon at Henley Field. The Mavericks scored eight runs in the final three innings as they won their third straight game.
The Bison used six pitchers in the contest and didn't score until backup catcher Tom Hrabchak drove home Travis Clark with a single two outs into the ninth inning.
The game was within reach for Bucknell (7-8) entering the later innings as it trailed just 5-0 entering the seventh inning. However, Nebraska-Omaha plated three runs in the seventh and five more in the eighth. The Bison were forced to use four pitchers to record the six outs in those two frames. Nebraska-Omaha (6-14) sent nine hitters to the plate in the seventh inning and 10 to the plate in the eighth inning.
Mark Waldron led the Mavericks offense with a 3-for-5 performance with three runs scored and three RBIs. Brandon Winkelmann also drove in three runs, while leadoff hitter Brady Hohl was 2-for-6 with four RBIs. Nebraska-Omaha tallied 15 hits and drew nine walks.
Curtis Smith (1-1) earned the win for the Mavericks as he pitched six shutout innings, striking out four and walking one. He sent the Bison down 1-2-3 three times. Anthony Falcone pitched the final three innings to earn his first save of the year.
Bucknell starter Dan Weigel (4-1) had the loss. He pitched 4.1 innings and gave up seven hits, five runs, four of which were earned, and one walk while striking out one. Weigel had gone at least seven innings in each of his first four starts this season.
Bob Donato posted a single in the bottom of the sixth inning for Bucknell, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. The Bison record is 27 games.
Bucknell will wrap up its seven-game trip to Florida Saturday at 1 p.m. against Northwestern. The Wildcats are scheduled to play a game against Patriot League foe at 9 a.m.
