WEST POINT, N.Y. - Bucknell claimed four of the nine bouts contested, but Army tallied two pins and earned a forfeit at heavyweight as the Bison lost by a 27-12 score to the Black Knights Tuesday evening at Gillis Field House. Austin Miller (125), Derrik Russell (141), Corey Lear (165) and Stephen McPeek (174) posted victories for Bucknell.
The Bison (3-15, 2-3 EIWA) were wrestling for the second time in three days and they saw a two-match winning streak against Army (8-5, 5-1 EIWA) snapped.
Miller, who leads Bucknell with 17 wins this year, put the Bison up 3-0 with a 13-7 decision in the opening bout of the day, but Jordan Thome then pinned Shawn Armato at 133 to give the Black Knights their first lead at 6-3.
A 4-1 decision by Russell at 141 tied the score at 6-6, but Army opened up a 15-6 advantage after a pin at 149 and a come-from-behind overtime decision at 157. Bucknell's 157-pounder John Regan led Jimmy Rafferty 7-3 at one point, but their bout ended up going to overtime tied at 10-10. Rafferty scored the winning takedown in the first sudden victory period.
Back-to-back decisions by Lear and McPeek brought the Bison to within 15-12, but Army scored two straight decisions at 184 and 197 and then earned six points for the forfeit at heavyweight for the final 15-point margin. Lear's victory was his third in a row, and his fifth in his last six bouts, as he improved to 5-0 in EIWA duals this season. McPeek has won five times in his last seven outings and is also undefeated in five EIWA duals.
Bucknell will be back in action Friday at Lock Haven. Start time for the match is 7 p.m. The Bison are in the midst of four matches in an eight-day span to conclude the regular season.
