Bucknell Wrestling Finishes Sixth at Season-Opening Navy Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Freshman Paul Petrov advanced to the championship bout of the 133-pound bracket, while Corey Lear (165) and Tyler Lyster (197) lost in the semifinals, but battled back to earn third-place finishes to highlight the season-opening Navy Classic for the Bucknell wrestling team. The Bison finished sixth of nine teams in the standings.
The third-seeded Petrov earned a first-round bye and the won a pair of bouts by decision to advance to the finals. There, he lost to Navy's Colton Rasche, the top seed in the field, by an 8-5 decision. Petrov is now 7-2 on the young season thanks to a 5-1 record in unattached tournaments.
Lear, the No. 17-ranked wrestler in the nation at 165 pounds and the top seed in his bracket, posted a pair of decisions, including a 1-0 win over Navy's Matt Jackson, to advance to the semifinals. He was then pinned by Navy's Jacob Schalles, knocking him to the consolation bracket. He bounced back well, winning his next two bouts by a combined 24-2 score to earn third place. It was his second career top-three finish at the Navy Classic.
The unseeded Lyster registered a pair of pins to earn his spot in the 197-pound semifinals. Both pins came in 2 minutes, 16 seconds. There, however, he was pinned by top-seeded Dustin Kilgore from Kent State. Kilgore went on to win the bracket with a 3-0 mark with all three wins by fall. Lyster bounced back in the consolation bracket in much the same way as Lear as he ended up winning two more matches by a combined 16-2 margin, including a 9-0 shutout of The Citadel's Marshall Haas.
Bucknell had a total of 17 wrestlers compete on Saturday.
The Bison will next be in action Dec. 1 at the Hoosier Duals. Bucknell will face Gardner Webb, host Indiana and Southern Illinois Edwardsville.
