STILLWATER, Okla. - The Bucknell wrestling team had a difficult schedule on Sunday as it faced a pair of ranked opponents inside Oklahoma State's Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Bison came away with two losses, falling to the No. 2-ranked Cowboys by a 35-6 score and to No. 22 Binghamton by a 36-6 margin. John Regan, Austin Miller and Corey Lear posted wins for Bucknell, which was coming off an 18-point victory at George Mason on Friday.
Bucknell (3-13), which is 0-4 against ranked opponents this year, had a difficult task on Sunday as Oklahoma State (11-0) had five ranked wrestlers in its lineup, while Binghamton had four. Five of those nine ranked individuals were listed in the top six of their weight class in the latest Intermat rankings.
Regan posted the only win for the Bison in the opening match of the day against the host Cowboys, who are ranked No. 1 nationally in the latest NWCA/USA Today poll. The only senior on the team pinned Alex Munoz in 5:51 at 157 pounds to avoid the shutout. Bucknell trailed 16-0 at that point, but the final score was closer than last year's 39-3 spread in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Regan's pin was his sixth straight victory, although that streak was broken in the nightcap when he lost by major decision to No. 6 Justin Lister.
Miller gave the Bison their first lead of the day in the match against Binghamton as he won the 125-pound bout on a late takedown for a final 5-4 decision. It was Miller's fifth win in his last seven bouts.
While Miller opened the match strong, Bucknell managed just one more victory against the Bearcats (12-3), who are listed 19th in the NWCA/USA Today poll. That win was courtesy of Lear, who defeated Matt Kaylor 1-0 thanks to an escape to start the second period.
Bonus-point losses hurt the Bison in both matches as Oklahoma State had one pin, one tech fall and three major decisions, while Binghamton posted two pins, one forfeit and three major decisions.
Bucknell will return home for the first time since Dec. 17 next Sunday, Feb. 5, when it hosts EIWA rival American inside Davis Gym at noon. Live video of the match will be broadcast live on Bison Vision.
