Bucknell Wrestling Loses Three Close Matches at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. - Two matches weren't decided until the final bout and another was still in doubt entering the 197-pound weight class, but the Bucknell wrestling team posted an 0-3 record Friday at the Virginia Duals. The Bison lost to Buffalo, 19-13, The Citadel, 21-16, and Drexel, 20-17. Bucknell (2-10) led the Bulldogs 16-6 and the Dragons 17-10 before both opponents clinched victories with wins at the heavier weight classes.
Freshman 125-pounder Austin Miller and senior 149-pounder John Regan each posted a 3-0 record for the Bison. Miller collected a pair of major decisions, while Regan pinned a pair of opponents. Corey Lear (major decision vs. The Citadel) and Stephen McPeek (major decision vs. Drexel) added bonus-point victories to bring the Bucknell daily total to six, one-half of the 12 overall wins posted by Bison grapplers Friday.
Eight of Bucknell's 12 individual victories were registered by wrestlers in the five lightest weight classes.
The Virginia Duals are a 14-team bracketed event and Bucknell opened the day against Buffalo. Thanks to wins by Miller and Regan, the Bison held an early 7-6 advantage. However, the Bulls took a commanding 19-7 lead thanks to four straight victories at 157, 165, 174 and 184. Joe McMullan and Tyler Lyster closed the final gap with back-to-back decisions to end the match.
With the opening-round loss, Bucknell dropped to the consolation bracket and faced The Citadel. The Bison were again strong in the lower weight classes as they led 16-6 in the team score after Lear's 13-3 major decision over Mike Harper at 165. However, the Bulldogs captured the final four bouts, starting with No. 18-ranked Turtogtokh Luvsandorj's 3-2 decision over McPeek.
The match with The Citadel was still in doubt entering the heavyweight bout matching Bison freshman Tyler Lyster and the Bulldogs' Odi Delaney. Delaney ended up winning by a 5-4 decision, giving The Citadel the five-point win. Delaney, a redshirt junior, entered the day with a 9-2 record this season and nearly 70 career victories, while Lyster had just 19 career college bouts to his credit.
The lighter weights once again got things started well for the Bison in the final match of the day against Drexel. Bucknell won three of the first five bouts and built a 13-7 lead after Alex Pellicciotti's three-point decision at 157 pounds. The Bison extended their advantage to 17-10 after a McPeek major decision at 174.
The Dragons claimed four of the final five bouts, including the last three, for the 20-17 victory. Bucknell actually led by a 17-16 score entering the heavyweight match, but redshirt senior Kyle Frey defeated Lyster, 10-1.
Thanks to its victory, Drexel finished in 13th place at the Virginia Duals. The two-day event wraps up Saturday with the championship match at 8:30 p.m. Missouri, Edinboro, Kent State and Old Dominion are the four semifinal teams.
Bucknell will be back in action next Saturday, Jan. 21, when it wrestles at EIWA opponent Lehigh. Start time is 2 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa.
